Faculty
at the University of Connecticut are one of our most treasured
resources and power our teaching, learning, research, and service
mission. At the University of Connecticut, we believe that a diverse
faculty can carry out the mission of our University better than
a non-diverse one. And we have made significant progress in creating
a more diverse faculty and staff on campus.
Of
the 1,165 full time faculty members, 16.1% are members of ethnic
and racial minority groups (Asian Americans, Native Americans,
African Americans, and Latinos), which is a significant increase
from 1985, when just 7% of the faculty were from minority groups.
The percentage of full time faculty members from underrepresented
groups (Native Americans, African Americans, and Latinos) increased
from 3.5% in 1985 to 7% in 2002. The gender diversity of the faculty
also continues to increase. Today, women compose 30.4% of the
full time faculty, up from 20.2% in 1985.
Although
we have made substantial progress in this area, we know that more
improvement is necessary. For more information regarding the Universities
