In addition, OMIA actively works with community, philanthropic, educational, and corporate organizations at the local, national, and international levels to enhance diversity issues on campus. The primary objective of the unit is to reinforce our collective commitment to diversity at the University of Connecticut by focusing on four strategic priorities:

  1. Enhancing Institutional Capacity for Diversity
    Strategies:
Consulting and providing guidance to units, schools, colleges, and institutional leadership to insure that diversity initiatives are enabled and institutionalized across campus.
  2. Expanding Access & Equity for Students, Faculty and Staff
    Strategies:
Developing pipeline, academic success, mentoring programs, grant funded projects, target of opportunity faculty and staff hires, and other activities to enhance the recruitment, retention, promotion and success of students, faculty, and staff with a specific focus on coordinating and linking projects for systemic success.
  3. Assessing Campus Climate and Diversity Outcomes Across Campus
    Strategies:
Launching and co-sponsoring cross-sectional, database, and longitudinal research projects of students, faculty, and staff with respect to issues of campus climate, intergroup relations, academic achievement, retention, and the educational benefits of diversity.
  4. Developing Citizens and Leaders for a Diverse World
    Strategies:
Launching and participating in leadership, service learning, and community enhancement initiatives focused towards enhancing intergroup relations, leadership skills, cross-cultural communication, and community building skills amongst students, faculty, and staff.

Units of OMIA
OMIA is composed of several units that differ with respect to mission, programs of instruction, services provided, and the nature of their contributions to the core mission of the University. They are connected in their dedication to promoting international, diversity, multicultural, and equity issues in teaching, learning, research, and programmatic initiatives across campus. Generally, these units are organized into four categories: (1) Equity and Compliance Units, (2) Multicultural Centers, (3) Multicultural Institutes and Programs, and (4) the Office of International Affairs.

If you would like more detailed information on the services OMIA provides you can visit their website at www.omia.uconn.edu or call them at (860) 486-5848 (phone).
