Retention and Graduation
Retention refers to the University’s ability to keep entering students enrolled. Retention rates are tabulated after each year. For the class of 2000, the 1 year retention rate for minority students was actually higher than that of Whites. The University was able to retain 89.2% of its minority students (Asian American, Native American, African American, and Latinos) and 88.5% of its White students. The retention rate for the freshmen class entering in 1998 was 79.5% for Whites and 75.3% for minority students. There was some degree of variation among minority groups. The 3-year retention rate was 80% for Asian Americans, 71.7% for African Americans, and 74.4% for Latinos.

Graduation rates are calculated after 4 years, 5 years and 6 years. 41.6% of White students and 28.3% of minority students who entered with the freshmen class of 1997 graduated in 4 years. The 6 year graduation rate for the freshmen class entering in the fall of 1995 was 64.8% for minority students and 70.8% for Whites.
